Life in the City

Chapter 22: A Day at the Supermarket

It is Saturday.
The air is hot, but the city is busy.
She says, “Let’s go shopping.”
I nod. We walk to the supermarket.

Inside, the lights are bright.
There are many people.
Carts roll on the floor.
Children laugh.
Old people walk slowly.

We take a basket.
She says, “We need fruit.”
We go to the fruit stand.
Apples, bananas, oranges.
I pick two apples.
She smiles, “Good choice.”

Next, we go to the bread aisle.
The smell is warm.
I like the smell of fresh bread.
I think, Maybe I want to work here one day.
I look at a young man in a blue shirt.
He wears a name tag.
He puts bread on the shelf.
He smiles at customers.
I think, He looks busy, but useful.

We buy rice, milk, and some candy.
At the cashier, I watch the worker scan each item.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
She says, “Have a nice day.”
I smile.
I think, Maybe I can do a job like this.
I can help people. I can earn money.
Work is not far away. Work is near.

We leave the supermarket.
Bags in our hands.
The sun is still bright.
But my mind is brighter.
I feel a new idea:
One day, I will study.
Then I will find work.
I will stand strong in this city.
