Life in the City
Chapter 23: First Work Day (Extended)
One week later,
I walk past a small shop.
It sells books and notebooks.
A sign says: Help Wanted.
I stop.
My heart beats fast.
I think, Can I do this?
I walk in.
The shop owner is an old man.
He smiles.
“Do you want to work?” he asks.
I nod.
“Yes, I can help.”
He shows me the job.
“Put books on the shelf.
Keep the place clean.
Say hello to customers.”
I say, “Okay.”
It feels simple, but new.
I start.
I carry books.
I clean the table.
A woman comes in.
She looks around.
She seems lost.
I take a small step.
“Can I help you?” I ask.
She smiles, “Yes, I need a notebook.”
I walk to the shelf.
I take one and give it to her.
She says, “Thank you.”
Her voice is kind.
I feel warm inside.
Later, a young boy enters.
He wants a storybook.
I search with my hands.
I find a book with a blue cover.
I give it to him.
His eyes shine.
He holds it close.
The old man watches me.
He nods.
He says, “Good. You learn fast.”
I feel proud.
I think, Work is not only money.
Work is people.
Work is service.
Work is respect.
At the end of the day,
the old man gives me some money.
It is not much.
But I feel rich.
I walk home with a light step.
When I meet her, I tell her.
She listens with bright eyes.
She says, “I am proud of you.”
Her words are more than money.
That night,
I look at my hands.
They are a little tired.
But my heart is strong.
I think, This is only the start.
