Life in the City

Chapter 24: The Difficult Customer

The next week,
I work at the book shop again.
The air is warm.
The shop is quiet.

Then, a man walks in.
His steps are loud.
His face is serious.
He looks around fast.

He says, “Where is the map book?!”
His voice is strong.
I feel nervous.
My hands shake a little.
I say, “Please wait. I will look.”

I search the shelf.
Many books.
Blue, red, green covers.
I cannot find the map book.
My heart beats faster.

The man says, “Too slow!
Don’t you know your own shop?”
I bite my lip.
I feel small.

Then the old owner comes.
He smiles at the man.
“Sir, here is the map book,” he says.
He takes it from the top shelf.
The man takes it quickly.
He pays and leaves without a smile.

I look down.
I feel weak.
The old man touches my shoulder.
“Don’t worry,” he says.
“Some customers are hard.
Stay calm.
Be polite.
That is the real work.”

I nod.
I think, Work is not always easy.
But even hard moments can teach me.
I must be patient.
I must be kind, even when people are not.

That night,
I tell her about the man.
She listens and says,
“You stayed polite. That is good.”
Her words heal me.
I feel stronger.
