Life in the City
Chapter 3: A Small Problem
After the break, we go back to class.
The sun shines through the window.
The room feels hot.
I sit at my desk and open my notebook.
Ms. Hoa writes words on the board.
“Listen and repeat,” she says.
We all speak together.
Some students speak loudly.
Some speak quietly.
I try to speak, but my voice is not strong.
“Nam,” Ms. Hoa says.
“Please read this sentence.”
She points to the board.
My hands feel cold.
My heart beats fast.
I stand up.
I read slowly, “This… is… my… book.”
The class is silent.
Then one boy laughs.
He sits in the back.
His name is Tuan.
He is smart, but he likes to joke.
I feel my face turn red.
I look down.
I want to sit.
But Ms. Hoa smiles at me.
“Good, Nam,” she says.
“Next time, louder. You can do it.”
I feel better.
I smile a little.
Minh whispers, “Don’t worry. You did well.”
The lesson continues.
We read, we write, we listen.
Slowly, I feel brave again.
I raise my hand.
I answer a question.
This time, the teacher nods.
“This is correct,” she says.
The bell rings at noon.
It is time for lunch.
We put our books away.
We go outside.
The playground is full of noise and games.
I walk with Minh to the canteen.
The problem is small now.
The day is bright again.
