Life in the City

Chapter 4: Lunchtime

The bell rings for lunch.
Students hurry to the canteen.
The canteen is big but always full.
The smell of rice and soup fills the air.
People stand in line.
Everyone is hungry.

I walk with Minh.
We take trays and wait.
Today’s lunch is rice, meat, and vegetables.
I also buy a small carton of milk.
We sit near the window.
The sun shines on the table.

“Are you okay, Nam?” Minh asks.
“Yes,” I say.
“I was nervous in class. But I feel better now.”
Minh smiles. “Don’t worry. You are learning. We all make mistakes.”

We eat.
Around us, students talk and laugh.
At another table, Tuan and his friends are joking loudly.
He sees me and smiles in a funny way.
I look away.

A girl comes to our table.
She is in our class, but we do not talk much.
Her name is Linh.
She has short hair and bright eyes.
“Can I sit here?” she asks.
“Yes, of course,” Minh says.

She sits down.
We eat together.
She says, “I like English class. But today was hard.”
I laugh a little. “Yes, hard for me too.”
She looks at me kindly. “You read well. Better than me.”

Her words surprise me.
I feel warm inside.
Maybe I am not so bad.

After lunch, we go outside.
The playground is full of children.
Some play football.
Some jump rope.
Some sit under a tree and talk.

I stand with Minh and Linh.
For the first time today, I feel light.
The school feels friendly.
The afternoon waits.
